What's Cooking? A Retro Scene of Nuclear Domensticity Gone Arwy Artwork | By Joan Seed
A Love Letter from Joan
Darling,
They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach—but what if the oven is set to apocalypse? In “What’s Cooking,” I set the table with irony, glazed the roast with dark humor, and basted the whole affair in symbolic chaos. That’s not dinner smoking, dear—it’s an era imploding.
Inspired by those perfectly poised 1960s homemakers who made tuna casserole with one hand and existential dread with the other, this piece flips the script. She’s not asking what’s for dinner. She’s wondering if this is her last supper.
Meant for the walls of thinkers, rebels, and interior designers with a taste for the unsettling, this artwork is part climate warning, part gender satire, and all retro pulp drama.
Bon appétit.
Love,
Joan

Description:
A cheeky detonation of 1960s domestic bliss, "What's Cooking" is a retro-surrealist explosion of apron-clad absurdity, scorched pot roast, and political subtext. This bold collage disrupts the pastel calm of vintage kitchens with nuclear heat and cinematic flair. It's a dinner party for the disenchanted—served hot with satire.

This ironic retro-futurist artwork plays with 1960s domesticity and surrealist satire, turning the traditional kitchen scene into a cinematic moment of domestic disaster. A socio-political metaphor wrapped in mid-century kitsch, "What's Cooking" is a conversation starter and bold, large-format statement piece for interior designers, collectors of symbolic and comedic art, and galleries showcasing political or gender commentary art. Perfect for those who savor dark humor, climate anxiety, and retro domestic rebellion.
